Biography

Chris Lorey is one of the creative forces behind CAVE. As guitarist, keyboard player, co-founder and principal songwriter, he combines powerful riffs, progressive influences and memorable melodies into the band’s unmistakable sound. His compositions are driven by emotion, precision and the ambition to create songs that leave a lasting impression.

Chris grew up near Ludwigsburg, Germany, where his fascination with music began in kindergarten during early music education. He started playing the recorder at the age of six before moving on to classical guitar three years later. Although drums had originally been his first choice, growing up in a terraced house quickly ruled that option out. Looking back, that unexpected limitation ultimately led him to discover the instrument that would define his musical career.

Even as a child, Chris wasn’t satisfied with simply learning existing songs. By the age of nine he was already writing his own compositions, always searching for ways to express ideas and emotions through music. Classical music, jazz and classic rock played an important role in his upbringing before artists like Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Dream Theater and Fates Warning shaped his own musical identity. Guitarists such as John Petrucci and Slash became lasting influences on both his technique and songwriting.

Years of classical and jazz guitar lessons provided a solid technical foundation before Chris continued largely as a self-taught musician. He credits discipline, curiosity and a good musical ear as the qualities that helped him develop—not only as a guitarist but also as a songwriter capable of thinking beyond a single instrument.

Long before CAVE officially existed, Chris and his longtime friend Simon spent countless evenings writing songs and recording demos in a basement studio. When Roberto Palacios heard those recordings, the idea of turning the project into a real band was born. As co-founder and principal songwriter, Chris continues to define CAVE’s musical direction. Touring with MASTERPLAN and releasing Out Of The Cave and Into The Promised Land have become major milestones, but for Chris the journey is far from over. His dream is to see CAVE continue to grow, perform on the world’s biggest stages and create music that resonates with listeners long after the final note.
